What Did We Do?

Airman Basic Wangard, Logan J. Third generation Wangard to serve. My oldest grandson. Think I have any pride in him?

This old Air Force Nam vet helped raise him. I held him as a baby. Now what? With 25 more days of basic, he excels. That's no surprise. Just as his Dad did for four years in the Army, making E-5 in three.

But what does young Airman Logan face? The scientists say by 2050, 27 feet of sea level rise. Last  summer heat records all over the world as wildfires raged—Canada, Portugal and Spain.

What did my generation do? Well, we pretty much wrecked the world. Now Logan’s generation has to clean up our mess. Burn those fossil fuels, some say. China and India with their billions of people have no other choice.

So when the ocean currents change, Space Command better have great big space ships and another planet to take them to, because this planet is all done.

People think I am crazy. See how crazy I am in 2050. I will be long gone. When I die I hope to look God directly in the face and ask for wings so once again I can fly and land on Logan’s shoulder to once again serve, protect and save.
