Help Another

By - Martinsburg, West Virginia

If you can stand and watch the shadows gather,
Yet firmly hold to what you know is right,
If you can smile and say: “It doesn’t matter,”
However dark, you still can see the light.
If you can stretch your hand to help another
While grimly clinging to the ledge yourself,
If you can make him feel he’s still our brother
And worth an effort to redeem himself,
Wait not for strength to move a mountain
Nor crave the deeds that win the world’s acclaim
But stretch that hand and speak that word
And feel the humble glory far beyond all fame.
