My Face Was Red

By - VA Dayton, Ohio

When I entered nurses training I was young, and from a very small town in Indiana.

To me, everything seemed to be on a large scale.

The fire escape chute intrigued me. I vowed, someday, to investigate by way of a ride in the laundry basket.

One morning I decided this is the time to take the ride. Unnoticed I climbed into the basket and down I went, from third floor to the basement. Rough ride and a fast one.

With great force the basket hit the basement door and out we popped in the airway. When I saw a receiving line of three people, the charge Nurse, Superintendent and Fire Inspector, my face was very red.

I said, “Good morning”. The trio suppressed laughter. The Superintendent spoke, “Now, young woman, return to your floor the same way you came down” I replied, “I shall try, but I will be late for duty”.

The trio laughed. The incident soon forgotten. Was I lucky?
