Saluting the ghosts on the beach Is something you just can’t teach You must have experienced it Memories a lifetime ago you don’t forget Dad was 100 when he went back Hadn’t been to Omaha since d day that’s a fact Spent a lifetime trying to heal No one but another d day veteran had the same feel Dad was 20 when the ramp opened Stepped into a sea of red Dad almost drowned But he made it to the beach instead Dad would never talk about what he’d seen But at 90 he began to talk He’d stay up night after night Wanted to tell my brother even while he was in his cell block It was like the flood gates opened All the emotions and pain came out What d day 1944 was like He talked so much about it I thought he’d burn out Finally at 100 dad knew he didn’t have much time left He made the decision to go back He dug out his uniform that had been in his war chest Hand and hand my dad and I Walked the beach of Omaha one day Dad stood at attention And saluted his long dead brothers whom paved the way ****never forget the sacrifices made by our world war 2 veterans for they are the reason we walk a path of freedom today…… WB KSG
