it was cold Colder than hell Looking at the snow Hard to dispel Soldiers bodies Prone……laid out No time to frown No time to pout The medic sat next to me I asked him Do u believe in life after death He looked at me -a scar across his eye I couldn’t look away- although I tried No….he said with a Texas drawl when yuur gone your gone So long sucker ……that’s all Well damn I didn’t want to think like that There’s more than death there had to be Otherwise why am I here Damn the irony…. Just then a mortar flew past Those of us living Dove in our fox holes To survive the blast I looked over And saw that the medic took flak Holding his guts inside From this hell fire blast He didn’t live long He died pretty fast I remember saying the Lord’s Prayer As I held his hand before he passed Before he died he uttered a few words He said in a whisper I barely heard I was wrong - God is near He took a final breath and his life disappeared I think about him Often now that I’m old I remember the blasts Abd the nights so cold I’ll never forget the medic Whom died in the night Whom knew god was present And I believe he saw the light WB KSG (c)
