Can you imagine the courage it took To cross 400 yards of open beach Machine gun, mortar and artillery fire no time to realize that your future looks dire Omaha’s beach had gentle slopes Immediately behind rose high sandy bluffs Infantrymen had to move thru the surf and beach defences The waves coming in was intense and rough German gun positions peppered the shore The moment troops left their landing craft They were gunned down Leaving a trail of death and gore Above was a 100 foot high bluff Shells and mortar bombs caused most of the injuries barbed wire, mines and hidden Bobby trap explosives Annihilation was the Germans motive Omaha was covered with the dead Helping a fallen soldier mean certain death for yourself Men were also being drowned by the weight of their gear It’s hard to imagine isn’t it- the terror the fear They say God watches over the battlefield I pray that is a fact 2501 American servicemen died Service before self to their country but for the families- their soldiers never came back….. ****soon all of the world war 2 veterans whom survived 6 June 1945 D-Day will no longer be among us- Written by : Kimberly Stowe green
