GREETING THE MOON Waking one evening I walked to the window To greet the new moon and gaze at the willow And much to my surprise there was a hoot owl Covered with snow like a down-filled pillow A majestic bird whose soft cries filled the night But gave smaller creatures such terror and fright With keen eyes all aglow and ears perked upright I was truly in awe of this creature that night I admired his steadfastness and tenacity as he Stood motionless, ever gazing, from that majestic tree Fear not, creature of the night, you shall have your wish For patience will ultimately present you a dish I wished him well and returned to my bed For I too must prepare for the day that’s ahead Will he greet me again when another day passes Or be gone for good with the migrating masses Mario Bonfiglio 2018
