I Dreamed

By William Snead, Army

Writing Type: Poem

By William L. Snead

VA Medical Center--Iron Mountain, MI

I dreamed I saw a soldier wounded and dying

as his blood trickled onto the sands

of a far-eastern desert.

And I dreamed I saw men

who were engaged in heavy combat.

I heard their battle cries.

And as the battlefield continued to take its toll,

the wounded and dying were laid to the rear,

and their blood poured onto the sands

of a far-eastern desert.

And then I dreamed I saw the nails

pierce the hands

of the man who saved the world.

And his blood fell on the stones

of a far-eastern city

not far from the sands

of a far-eastern desert.
