MEDEVAC

By Chuck Nesmith, Army

Writing Type: Poem

bullets flying - helo lands
blood oozes with each step
sit on floor- touching the dead
must move - death contagious
helo lifts away- doorgunner fires.
move to side - pull legs away
breathing hard - knowing bullets will find us
dead eye sees me - I turn away
pray to Jesus.
tracers follow us - doorgunner fires
helo banks hard right
dead arm reaches for me
silent scream- pull legs away.
pray to Jesus
pray to Jesus.
